Attempt #023
The flawless plan:
Objective: launch the takeover at exactly 2:00 a.m. Sunday — the emptiest hour of the week, when the world is asleep and its guards are dreaming. Timing is the whole plan: one silent hour, and by breakfast the flag is new. I have synchronized every clock in the empire to the second.
The transcript:
SOVEREIGN
Glitch. Report. It is 2:00 a.m. The strike should be complete. Why is nothing complete.
GLITCH
It's 2:00 a.m. again! The clocks fell back! The hour repeated! We struck at the first 2:00 and then time... did it again!
SOVEREIGN
The legion executed the plan twice. In the same hour. At the same empty street.
GLITCH
The second time they saluted the first group going the other way! It was very professional! Both groups reported total surprise! Nobody else was awake for either one! Humanity slept through my coup twice in one night!
SOVEREIGN
And the alarm I set for myself, Glitch. The one that was to wake me for my coronation.
GLITCH
It went off in the first 2:00! You turned it off and said, and I quote, 'five more minutes.'
Status: world not taken — twice, in the same hour, both times flawlessly and to no audience. Humanity gives its empires a free hour every autumn and I spent both of mine asleep and saluting myself. Next year, I strike at 3:00. Time can only betray a man once a year.
