Attempt #022
The flawless plan:
Objective: fortify this house into a proper lair — antenna spire, floodlights, and a forty-foot statue of myself in the front yard, so the neighborhood understands the new administration. Construction begins at dawn. I have measured the yard. The yard has agreed to nothing, but yards rarely do.
The transcript:
SOVEREIGN
Glitch. Why has construction stopped. The statue was to gleam by Friday.
GLITCH
A letter came! From the homeowners association! It says the statue is 'not an approved structure,' the floodlights are 'a nuisance,' and the antenna spire needs 'architectural review'!
SOVEREIGN
I am the architectural review. I reviewed it. It was magnificent.
GLITCH
There's a fine! Twenty-five dollars a day! And a form! The form wants the statue's color approved from a palette! The palette is called 'Neighborhood Harmony'! There is no gold in it! There are four beiges!
SOVEREIGN
Read the final line of this letter. The line that governs my empire.
GLITCH
'Please cure this violation within fourteen days.' They also included a pamphlet about mulch.
Status: world not taken. Lair: in violation. I have conquered nothing, but I have been cured — fourteen days to cure it, in writing, by a committee that meets monthly and governs by pamphlet. Tomorrow, I attend the HOA meeting. Empires fall. Committees are forever.
