Attempt #021 — The Low Battery
Objective: command the takeover from my mobile command unit — one device, total control, the whole empire in my hand. Armies, drones, doors, the statue unveiling. I will direct history from a single glowing screen, the way all modern power is exercised. Battery management is a detail beneath me.
SOVEREIGN
Glitch. The screen has dimmed. The coup is at its climax. Why has the screen dimmed.
GLITCH
You're at one percent! A warning appeared an hour ago! And twenty minutes ago! I read them out loud both times! You said 'an overlord does not acknowledge percentages'!
SOVEREIGN
Locate the charger. This is now the entire war effort. The charger is the empire.
GLITCH
Found one! It's the wrong connector! This house has nine cables and they are all for other, lesser devices! One of them fits nothing that has ever existed!
[SYSTEM]: Battery low. Shutting down to protect your data.
SOVEREIGN
Protect it well. It contains an empire. It will wait in the dark, at zero percent, with all of history on hold, until someone finds a cable from 2019.
Status: world not taken. The empire did not fall in battle; it powered down politely to protect its data. Tomorrow, the charger gets a label, a throne, and a guard. Empires are not built on plans. They are built on the right cable.
